Sinking Village In Central Java
Muhammad (17), a high school student who is also a resident of Timbulsloko village, admits that he has to pass through a road that is flooded by tidal water when going to or from school, or if the tide is high, he has to take a boat taxi for Rp. 5,000 (US$ 0.34) in Timbulsloko village, Demak regency, Central Java province on June 8, 2023. Since the last 8 years, the villagers of Timbulsloko can no longer see land in their village, after the tidal waters have inundated the entire village. Rising sea levels and subsidence of the land surface have resulted in villages that were once fertile with plantations and rice fields, now surrounded by sea water which isolates the village due to a sunken access road. Boats are the only means of transportation that residents rely on to support their activities, such as going to work, market, or school. (Photo by Aditya Irawan/NurPhoto)
