Commemorations also took place in other parts of Moscow, as well as in many other cities such as St. Petersburg, Volgograd and Rostov-on-Don. In 1941, German forces launched Operation Barbarossa, sweeping through expansive areas of the Soviet territory almost to the point of taking Moscow.
