Muthu Raja Elephant, gifted to Sri Lanka from Thailand in 2001, was accused of being ill-treated in a Buddhist temple located in the southern part of the island, and with the intervention of the Thai Embassy in Colombo, he was rescued and treated at the Dehiwala Zoo and taken back to Thailand on July 2.
