Display Of Yellow Umbrellas Paying Homage To The Hong Kong Umbrella Movement
Display of yellow umbrellas paying homage to the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement in Markham, Ontario, Canada, on June 24, 2023. The Umbrella Movement (Umbrella Revolution) was a political movement that emerged during the 2014 Hong Kong protests when Demonstrators brought Hong Kong to a virtual standstill in when they demanded the right for the territory to pick its own leaders. Its name arose from the use of umbrellas as a tool for passive resistance to the Hong Kong Police's use of pepper spray to disperse the crowd during a 79-day occupation of the city demanding more transparent elections, in reaction to a decision made by China that it would allow elections in Hong Kong in 2017, but only from a list of candidates pre-approved by the Chinese government.
