Iran-Moharram Carnival Marking Ashura
Iranian performers, whose faces are painted red and who are wearing black robes, perform as Jinn during a religious carnival marking Ashura on the eighth day of the Muslim holy month of Moharram. in Khomeyni Shahr which is also known as Sede, in the central district of Khomeyni Shahr County near of the city of Isfahan, 495 km (309 miles) south of Tehran, July 27, 2023. Moharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is considered a sacred month for Muslims around the world. It is a time of mourning and reflection, particularly for Shi'ite Muslims, who commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, and his companions in the Battle of Karbala.
