Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and other insect vectors continue to place a critical burden on the world's poor, particularly in tropical and subtropical areas including countries in the South-East Asia Region. Some pockets in Nadia, North 24 Parganas and Hooghly have seen a sudden rise in cases, and at least five people in Kolkata have died due to dengue in the last week. According to World Health Organization (WHO), Vector-borne diseases account for more than 17% of all infectious diseases, causing more than 700 000 deaths annually. They can be caused by parasites, bacteria or viruses. Malaria parasitic infection transmitted by Anopheline mosquitoes causes an estimated 219 million cases globally, and results in more than 400,000 deaths every year. Most of the deaths occur in children under the age of 5 years. Dengue viral infection is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes.
