El Nino Boosts Salt Production In Indonesia
A salt farmer puts seawater into his salt pond in the Talise salting area, Palu, Central Sulawesi, Indonesia on September 3, 2023. The dry season that caused hot temperatures and the El Nio phenomenon in the region pushed up local people's salt production by up to 20 percent. The increase in production was followed by an increase in the price of salt consumption from an average of IDR 3,000 to IDR 5,000 per kilogram. The increase was also welcomed positively by the government because it could reduce salt imports which this year are estimated to reach 2.8 million tons to meet industrial and consumption needs for 250 million people.
