Cutting And Selling Flor De Calabaza (Squash Blossom) In Mexico

Luis and Yamileth Ortega Padron, brothers, farmers and students, make bunches of squash flowers that they cut for sale in the Tlahuac mayor's office, Mexico City. The squash flower is bright and colorful, and is extremely short-lived, with some species only opening for one day. The characteristic yellow-orange pigment of the pumpkin flower indicates that it contains flavonoids, compounds that function as antioxidants, which inhibit the oxidation of artery-clogging bad cholesterol.
