After years of efforts to curb desertification, a green belt has been built on the rim of the Taklimakan Desert in Xinjiang, China, which is the largest desert in the country.
Running along the edge of the Taklimakan Desert, the 1,321-km-long Tarim River is China's longest inland river.
17 million mu (about 1.13 mln hectares) of natural poplar forest is grown along the river, forming an important ecological barrier in southern Xinjiang.
