(230913) -- TAXKORGAN, Sept. 13, 2023 (Xinhua) -- This photo taken on Sept. 21, 2012 shows Laqini Bayika riding a yak to cross a river during patrols in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, located in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, usually sees a surge in tourism in September. For many tourists from across the country, the house where the "role model of the times" Laqini Bayika lived is a place they must pay a visit. Bayika Kalidibek, Laqini's 71-year-old father, always tell them about the life of his son.
Born in a small village in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, Laqini grew up tough on the Pamir Plateau in a harsh environment. With an average elevation of over 4,000 meters, his hometown borders Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Patrolling the border has been a tradition for many locals. Laqini's father and grandfather were both border patrolmen, and he started to carry on the mission in 2004.
