(230913) -- TAXKORGAN, Sept. 13, 2023 (Xinhua) -- This photo taken on Sept. 28, 2013 shows Laqini Bayika patrolling with his yaks at the border areas in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, located in China's far west Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, usually sees a surge in tourism in September. For many tourists from across the country, the house where the "role model of the times" Laqini Bayika lived is a place they must pay a visit. Bayika Kalidibek, Laqini's 71-year-old father, always tell them about the life of his son.
Born in a small village in Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County, Laqini grew up tough on the Pamir Plateau in a harsh environment. With an average elevation of over 4,000 meters, his hometown borders Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Patrolling the border has been a tradition for many locals. Laqini's father and grandfather were both border patrolmen, and he started to carry on the mission in 2004.
