The Kathina Festival In New Zealand

Devotees from the Sri Lankan Buddhist community are offering prayers during a pirith chanting ceremony ahead of the annual Kathina festival at the Samadhi Buddhist Temple in Rolleston, a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, on November 24, 2023. The Kathina is an annual two-day Buddhist festival that occurs at the end of the three-month rainy season retreat of Theravada Buddhist monks in various countries including Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. During this time, devotees are engaging in a series of special religious activities, with the most significant being the Kathina Cheevara Puja, or the offering of robes to monks who have completed their rainy season retreats.
