The Kathina Festival In New Zealand
Buddhist monks are chanting during a pirith ceremony to invoke blessings ahead of the annual Kathina festival at Samadhi Buddhist Temple in Rolleston, a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, on November 24, 2023. The Kathina is an annual two-day Buddhist festival that occurs at the end of the three-month rainy season retreat of Theravada Buddhist monks in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, India, and Thailand. Devotees are performing a series of special religious activities, with the most important one being the Kathina Cheevara Puja, or the offering of robes to monks who have completed the rainy season retreats.
