Daily Life In India
An iconic yellow ambassador taxi is driving past the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, India, on November 26, 2023. These iconic taxis have been plying the streets of Kolkata since 1958, and they are a common sight in the city's traffic. The yellow taxis are known for their reliability and affordability, and they are a popular choice for both locals and tourists. The first taxi in Calcutta started in 1909. The offices of the French Chevy Jean Company were located on Chowringhee Road, where the Frank Ross Company's drug store now stands. They hailed the first taxi on the way to Kolkata. The meter gauge cars used to run from Chowrangi to Dum Dum, and from Barrackpur to Bude Budge. The small two-cylinder 'Caron' cars had room for only two passengers. The Kolkata yellow taxi is based on the Hindustan Ambassador, which was a car produced in India from 1958 to 2014. The Kolkata Yellow Taxi is a 4-door sedan with a 1.5-litre petrol engine.
