National Assembly Passes Ban On Dog Meat Consumption
A pot of dog meat soup is simmering and waiting for customers at a restaurant in Chilsung Market in Daegu, South Korea, on January 11, 2024. The ''Special Law on the End of Dog Meat Consumption'' was passed and enacted in the National Assembly on January 9, 2024. In Korea, consuming dog meat will no longer be permitted. The notorious reputation of being a ''dog-eating barbarian'' and the ''dog meat industry'' will also fade into history. The newly enacted law will support the closure of dog farms and related facilities for three years after its promulgation, leading to the extinction of the industry. Starting from 2027, it will prohibit and penalize the breeding, farming, slaughter, distribution, and sale of dogs for consumption. The country now has a clear legal duty to formulate measures to end dog meat consumption and to provide the necessary administrative and financial support. (Photo by Seung-il Ryu/NurPhoto)
