Abrasion And Rising Sea Level Threatening The North Coast Of West Java
An aerial view shows Cemarajaya Village in Karawang Regency, West Java Province, on January 26, 2024. Village residents are reporting that the rate of abrasion due to waves and rising sea levels is increasing, with an average of 5 meters lost each year. Since 1998, the village has been experiencing tidal waves and rising sea levels, along with tidal floods, especially after plantation land was converted into fish and shrimp ponds. The plantations once owned by the residents have vanished, and their houses have sunk. Originally located about 1 kilometer from the coastline, the village is now directly facing the threat of waves and continues to suffer from abrasion, which is endangering its existence.
