Heifer Festival In Spain

Heifer Festival In Spain

In Colmenar Viejo, Spain, on January 27, 2024, the Fiesta de la Vaquilla, also known as the Heifer Festival, is taking place. This celebration occurs in Colmenar Viejo, Community of Madrid, on the last Saturday of January each year. During the festival, twenty-five heifers are walking through the streets of the municipality, filling them with color and dance until they converge in the town square. Some historians say that the origins of this festival can be traced back to Roman civilization, where young people dressed up in animal skins and antlers and ran after women, symbolizing an attempt to revive fertility after winter. Focusing attention on Colmenar Viejo, the origins of this celebration are dating back to the 13th century, when the municipality was consolidated. (Photo by Tomas Calle/NurPhoto)
