The Devil Of Tufara

The Devil Of Tufara

A boy representing the mask of death is preparing in a cellar in Tufara, Italy, on February 13, 2024. Shrove Tuesday is being celebrated according to tradition in Tufara, a small village in Molise. The Tufara carnival is renowned because the soul of the party is the Devil, a man who is wearing a papier-mache mask with a long tongue and is dressed in a costume made of goat skins. The Devil of Tufara is appearing at the beginning of the celebrations and is screaming, running, and wriggling to scare the crowd. This creature is always accompanied by two Elves and two Reapers, with whom he enjoys forming gangs and making noise in the village's alleys. (Photo by Davide Pischettola/NurPhoto)
