Melasti, Purification Ritual Ahead Bali's Silence Day

A Balinese Hindu is carrying sacred ornaments while participating in the Melasti ceremony on Masceti Beach in Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia, on March 8, 2024. The ritual, which is believed to purify and cleanse the universe, is held annually ahead of Nyepi, or the Balinese Day of Silence, which marks the new year of the Balinese Hindu calendar on March 11, 2024. Balinese will celebrate the day of seclusion on the island of Bali by not traveling, working, lighting lamps, cooking, or engaging in any other activities. (Photo by Johanes P. Christo/NurPhoto)
