Melasti, Purification Ritual Ahead Bali's Silence Day
A Balinese Hindu is throwing offerings into the sea during the Melasti ceremony on Petitenget Beach in Badung, Bali, Indonesia, on March 8, 2024. The ritual, which is believed to purify and cleanse the universe, is held annually before Nyepi, or the Balinese Day of Silence, which marks the new year of the Balinese Hindu calendar on March 11, 2024. The Balinese will celebrate the day of seclusion on the island of Bali by not traveling, working, lighting lamps, cooking, or engaging in any other activities. (Photo by Johanes P. Christo/NurPhoto)
