Dance Of Death In Verges - Spain
Several people dance during the procession and 'Dansa de la Mort', on March 28, 2024, in Verges, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. Every Maundy Thursday night, several skeletons parade in the town of Verges. The origin of this dance dates back to the epidemics of the black plague that ravaged Europe in the Middle Ages, between the fourteenth and seventeenth centuries. The dance indicates the inexorable passage of all men towards death, representing the scenes of Jesus' journey to Mount Calvary. The entire route is illuminated by torches and oil shells creating a dark atmosphere, while five people dressed as skeletons with rhythmic and repetitive sound of the drum perform different dances.
