Police Attack May Day Demonstration In Istanbul

Turkish riot police are standing guard at the Sarachane Park aqueduct, preventing a march on Taksim Square, during a May Day (Labour Day) rally to mark International Workers' Day in Istanbul, Turkey, on May 1, 2024. President Erdogan said on the eve of May Day that the annual protests would not be allowed to take place on Taksim Square, which was cordoned off by police. Legal experts say this stance violates the right of Turks to organise public meetings and demonstrations, a right upheld by the Constitutional Court in a ruling last October. Turkish police use tear gas during clashes on May 1, 2024, detained dozens of protesters attempting to tear down barricades in different districts of Istanbul after authorities banned May 1 rallies at the city's main Taksim Square. Tens of thousands of police were deployed across Istanbul, blocking even small sidestreets with metal barriers in an attempt to prevent groups of protesters from gathering.
