New Caledonia: Unrest Rocks French Territory Amid Proposed Changes To Voting Rules
Unrest rocked the French south Pacific territory of New Caledonia amid proposed changes to rules in voting that will allow French residents who lived in the territory for 10 years to cast votes in provincial elections. Locals fear the changes will dilute votes from the Kanak, the indigenous inhabitants of New Caledonia.
Overnight riots, fire, and looting reported in Noumea during protests on Monday continued on Tuesday, May 14.
