A group of civil activities is gathering in remembrance and solidarity with the tens of thousands of Tamil people killed in Mullivaikkal during the civil war in 2019. These activities are marking 15 years since the end of the civil war in Colombo, Sri Lanka, on May 18, 2024. According to the United Nations, the Sri Lankan Civil War is resulting in a significant number of casualties. Estimates indicate that more than 100,000 civilians and over 50,000 fighters from both sides of the conflict are losing their lives. Additionally, around 27,000 Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) cadres, over 28,000 Sri Lankan Army personnel, more than 1,000 Sri Lankan police officers, and about 1,500 Indian soldiers are reported to have died during the conflict.
