AmazingAnhui | Yangtze alligator guardian in E China nature reserve
(240520) -- HEFEI, May 20, 2024 (Xinhua) -- This photo taken on May 13, 2024 shows captive-born Yangtze alligators in Xiadu area in Anhui Yangtze alligator national nature reserve, Xuancheng City, east China's Anhui Province. The Yangtze alligator, which has lived on Earth for over 200 million years, is a first-class protected animal endemic to China. The species, also known as Chinese alligator, lives along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the longest waterway in the country.
Zhang Hongan lives near the Hongxing Reservoir in Xuancheng City, where he once accidentally found the trail of wild Yangtze alligators in 1982. In the more than 40 years from then on, Zhang's parents and brother had become rangers for Yangtze alligators. In 2024, Zhang Hongan took over the duty, working as a field ranger in Anhui Yangtze alligator national nature reserve. Today, 26 rangers and 170 micro-grid staff are devoted in the protection of the habitat of Yangtze alligators.
