STORYLINE:
On the night between Thursday and Friday, a torrent of water, mud and rock swept across the village of La Berarde in Isere in the French Alps, cutting off the village from the outside world.
Four helicopters were deployed to evacuate about 100 people.
With no casualties, all the homes of the village were destroyed.
The French government has promised an emergency fund to rebuild the village.
