Pope Francis Meets Grand Master Of The Order Of Malta - Vatican
Pope Francis meets Fra’ John Timothy Dunlap, Prince and Grand Master and head of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta on June 27, 2024 at the Vatican. The focus was on interventions in support of the Ukrainian population, from medical and social assistance to the distribution of meals and medicines, from transportation and accompaniment to reception points situated in various locations in Ukraine and neighbouring countries. Dunlap is the first Prince and Grand Master not to be of noble or aristocratic ancestry, which was traditionally a requirement for the role until a revision to the Order's constitution ordered by Pope Francis in 2022. The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes and of Malta, founded in Jerusalem around the year 1048, is a primary subject of international law and a Catholic and lay religious order.
