Thousands Participate In Muharram Mourning Process In Kashmir
Indian paramilitary soldiers are keeping vigil from the top of a building as thousands of Shia Muslims are attending the mourning procession to commemorate the martyrdom of Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussein (Husayn Ibn Ali) along with 72 loyal companions, who were killed in the battle of Karbala at Sadat Ahavi Hussainiya, which has a history of 250 years, on 8th of Muharram in Srinagar, Kashmir, India, on July 15, 2024. Thousands of Shia Muslims are participating in the traditional procession from Guru Bazar to Dalgate after the Jammu and Kashmir administration lifted the ban on the 8th Muharram procession last year after more than a decade. In the 1990s, the mourning procession was banned by the then government on the grounds that it caused militancy in Jammu and Kashmir. (Photo by Faisal Khan/NurPhoto)
