The Caves Of Matala In Crete Island

The ancient artificial caves in the cliff of the Matala bay, just above the famous sandy beach and the village is an archaeological site, created in the Neolithic Age for living while, carved in the sandstone, other caves were once used as tombs during the Roman period. Matala is popular for tourism, with visitors across the world. In the sixties and seventies Matala attracted hippies, dropouts and hitchhikers from Europe. Nowadays Matala is a vibrant tourist destination with cafes, taverns, bars, beachbars, hotels, rooms to let, shops, accomodation facilities etc around the beach with the crystal clear water.
