Poland Prepares To Commemorate The 85th Anniversary Of The WWII Outbreak
KRAKOW, POLAND - AUGUST 31:
Deatails of the monument to the Soviet Army soldiers who fell in the 'battle for the liberation' of Krakow in 1945, seen at Rakowicki Cemetery on the eve of the 85th anniversary of World War II's outbreak, on August 31, 2024, in Krakow, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland.
On September 1, 1939, Germany, joined by Slovakia, attacked Poland from the west and north, and on September 17, the Soviet Union attacked from the east. The defensive war continued until October 6, 1939, and although the Polish Army's regular battles ended, Poland never formally surrendered; by September 27, 1939, the Polish Underground State was established in the occupied territories.
