Anthene Emolus - Ciliate Blue Butterfly - Animal India
A Ciliate Blue butterfly (Anthene emolus), also known as the Bengal Common Ciliate Blue, rests on a leaf in a forest in Tehatta, West Bengal, India, on November 10, 2024. The male of this species displays a dull purple upperside with blue-suffused wing bases, accented by jet-black anticiliary lines, which slightly expand at the apex of the forewing. The female, in contrast, has a brown upperside with a soft violet-blue gloss near the wing bases. Butterflies like the Ciliate Blue are facing an increasing risk of extinction across South Asia due to habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use, echoing a global trend. Conservation efforts by scientists in South Asia aim to protect these vital pollinators. The scene captures the butterfly with a soft, natural light bokeh from the forest in the background.
