Emmanuel Macron presides the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Colmar
French President Emmanuel Macron presides over the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Colmar. The last stage of the Alsace campaign between November 1944 and February 1945, the liberation of the Colmar pocket was particularly long and hard fought, due in particular to extreme weather conditions and German defenses. The fighting led by the 1st Army commanded by General de Lattre de Tassigny and General Milburn's 21st American Army Corps would eventually lead to victory. On February 2, 1945, French armored vehicles entered the town. The liberation of Colmar was an emblematic victory for Allied efforts in Europe, illustrating the fraternity of arms between French, American and French Interior Forces units. Mentioned in the Order of the Army, the town of Colmar was awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm on June 30, 1948, for its patriotism and constant resistance during the occupation.
