La Négresse Neighborhood to Get a New Name - Biarritz

Illustrations - For several years the famous Bayonne brand and roaster "Café Négro" had changed its commercial name to that of "Kafe Beltza" "Café Noir" in Basque. The owners wanted to be in their time, far from all racial connotations. Thursday February 6, 2025, the Bordeaux administrative court of appeal rendered a decision in favor of the Mémoires et Partages association which demanded that the city of Biarritz change the name of the “La Négresse” district, judging it “sexist” and “racist”: the “La Négresse” district will therefore have to change its name.
