Protests In Ankara Intensify For Fourth Night Over Istanbul Mayor Jailed

Protesters take cover as Turkish riot police use tear gas and water cannon during a fifth night demonstration in Ankara, Turkey, on March 23, 2025, following the arrest of Istanbul's mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. Imamoglu, who is the chief rival of Turkey's President, was arrested on March 19, 2025, days before he was to be formally named the main opposition CHP's candidate for the 2028 presidential race. The Mayor of Istanbul, who was due to be selected as a presidential candidate for the opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) during a primary election today, was jailed on corruption charges following his detention earlier this week. He was among at least 100 politicians, business leaders and journalists detained as part of investigations into corruption and support for terrorism, according to Turkish authorities. Critics called the arrests politically motivated. Photo by Efekan Akyuz/ABACAPRESS.COM
