A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck south of Sand Point, Alaska, on Wednesday, July 16, at 12:37 p.m. Communities along 700 miles of Alaska's southern coast ordered residents to higher ground due to a tsunami warning. The Alaska Earthquake Center reported 40 aftershocks within the first three hours.

The tremor was felt as a milder Magnitude 5.3 in Whitehorse, 250 kilometers away. The quake occurred around 1:41 p.m. and was followed by aftershocks. Officials reported no immediate damage or injuries, and no tsunami warning was issued.
