Int'l treaty panel rejects trade curbs on all eels
A panel of the Washington Convention, a treaty regulating international trade of endangered species, discusses a proposal by the European Union to put all eel species, including the Japanese eel, under global restrictions, in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on Nov. 27, 2025. The panel overwhelmingly rejected the proposal amid calls from Japan, one of the world's largest consumers of the fish, to oppose the measure.
