Civilians Flee Aleppo Amid Kurdish-Government Clashes - Syria
Syrian civil defence rescuers assist residents fleeing from the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsud and Ashrafiyeh in the city of Aleppo, northern Syria on January 8, 2026, amid intense clashes between government forces and the Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) forces. Syria's government on January 7, 2026, demanded that Kurdish fighters leave the neighbourhoods they control in Aleppo following clashes between the two sides which saw thousands of civilians flee. The Syrian government and Kurdish-led forces traded blame over who started the deadly clashes on January 6, which killed 16 civilians and one defence ministry member.
