Ireland: Weather Warnings Reissued as Heavy Rain and Winds Batter Island

Twelve counties remain under weather warnings as Ireland braces for another day of torrential rain. A Status Orange rain warning is now in effect for Dublin, Wicklow, Louth, and Waterford. The alert for Dublin and Wicklow, which began this morning, has been extended until 3 p.m. on Friday, February 6. Status Yellow warnings remain in place for several other regions, while multiple train services have been suspended until further notice due to flooding.

London Heathrow alone saw more than 600 inbound and outbound flights delayed and a further 32 cancelled on Tuesday, December 9. The Met Office has a series of yellow weather warnings for wind and rain that are continuing throughout Wednesday.           Spain: Tenerife Activates Island Emergency Plan Amid Storm Claudia

          In response to the arrival of Storm Claudia, which is forecast to bring heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds, Tenerife activated its Island Emergency Plan (PEIN) on Wednesday, November 12. The island is currently under an orange alert for adverse weather. As precautionary measures, the government has closed schools for the afternoon and restricted access to Teide National Park and all hiking trails.

            Catalonia has been under a disruptive orange alert since Wednesday, November 5, for stormy weather, which is continuing today, Thursday, November 6, bringing over 40 liters of rain per square meter and causing widespread disruptions including 47 canceled flights at El Prat and multiple train and road line closures.

              Heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds caused significant disruption in Spain’s Extremadura region on Wednesday, November 5. The city of Cáceres was particularly hard hit, receiving 18 liters of rain in just half an hour, which led to localized flooding, fallen branches, and damage to cars and businesses. Due to an orange alert for rain issued by AEMET, all afternoon academic activities at the University of Extremadura were suspended.

                  On Wednesday, October 29, heavy rain, flash floods, and tornadoes struck Andalusia, especially Huelva and Seville. Emergency services reported over 1,300 incidents, including flooded roads, fallen trees, and trapped drivers. Huelva recorded up to 160 mm of rainfall, while Seville saw around 115 mm. Two people were injured, and a man in Gibraleón suffered a severe head injury after being struck by a falling structure. Alerts from Spain’s meteorological agency (Aemet) proved accurate, with red warnings for Huelva and orange for Seville.
