A massive fire broke out in a residential area of Oita, in the Kyushu region, on Tuesday night, November 18, with local authorities reporting one man in his 70s missing, over 170 buildings damaged, and 350 homes without power. Firefighters have been battling the blaze as the prefecture prepares to request disaster relief from the Self-Defense Forces. Authorities have confirmed the death of one person, whose gender has not been identified, found among the burnt remains.

The blaze broke out on a hill in Gangneung, about 170 km east of the capital Seoul, at around 8:30 a.m. local time (2330 GMT on Monday). The forest fire rapidly spread to private houses due to strong winds and dry weather. The wind with an instantaneous maximum speed of 30 meters per second blew over the eastern coastal areas. The fire was mainly brought under control about eight hours after the breakout. The fire allegedly burned 379 hectares of forest, or the size of about 530 soccer fields, as well as dozens of houses.
