Spain: Police Clash With Protesters in Madrid After Elderly Woman’s Eviction

Thousands of people took to the streets in Madrid and other Spanish cities on Wednesday, September 23, to protest the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen from the home she had lived in for more than 70 years, with police charging a group of demonstrators in the capital during a rally called by the Madrid Tenants' Union, which condemned the officers' actions. Earlier in the day, protesters clashed with police outside her building in the Retiro district as more than 15 police vans were deployed to break up an overnight camp and carry out the eviction. Video shows police charging protesters in central Madrid on Wednesday night after demonstrators staged a sit-in on Paseo de la Castellana.
