Manjusri image at Chikurin-ji temple unveiled for 1st time in 50 years

KOCHI, Japan - "Monju Bosatsu, " an image of Manjusri, sitting atop a roaring lion, which symbolizes the powerful voice of Buddhist Law and the power of Buddhism to overcome all obstacles, goes on display to the public on April 25, 2014 for the first time in 50 years at Chikurin-ji, a Shingon temple in Kochi, Kochi Prefecture, western Japan. The temple is number 31 on the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage said to be launched by Kukai, a renowned monk also known as Kobo Daishi, 1,200 years ago. The display is open to the public through May 25. NAGOYA, Japan - Russian Republic of Sakha President Vyacheslav Shtyrov shows off a picture of the head of a frozen mammoth believed to have lived 10,000 years ago and discovered in frozen soil 1,200 kilometers north of Yakutsk near the Arctic Ocean in November 2002. The mammoth will be on display at the 2005 World Exposition in Aichi Prefecture.

Sanzen'in unveils treasured Buddha statue

KYOTO, Japan - Yakushi, a statute of the Buddha of healing kept at Sanzen'in temple in Kyodo, is opened to the public for the first time in 1,200 years on Sept. 8. The wooden statute, which stands about 1.2 meters high, was craved by Saicho (767-822), the founder of the Tendai sect of Buddhism, during the Enryaku era (782-806). Sanzen'in said it opened the statue to the public in commemoration of the 1,200th anniversary of its foundation.

TOKYO, Japan - Crown Prince Naruhito addresses at the beginning of a major disaster preparedness drill held Oct. 24 for the first time in five years in Tokyo's Koto Ward. Around 1,200 fire fighters from 207 fire stations throughout Japan participated in the emergency drill.
