Lord Kanaloa wins Sprinters Stakes

FUNABASHI, Japan - Lord Kanaloa (front) gallops to victory in the 46th Sprinters Stakes at Nakayama Racecourse in Funabashi, Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, on Sept. 30, 2012, followed by top favorite Curren Chan. SAPPORO, Japan - The Mt. Komagatake volcano in southern Hokkaido erupts and belches smoke Oct. 28. Smoke rose about 1,200 meters from the crater at one point before subsiding later.

Women to join Nagasaki peiron meet

NAGASAKI, Japan - Women from the Nagasaki prefectural office on July 21 train for the first women's peiron dragon-boat racing contest this weekend in Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan. City government employees, local housewives and other women will make up seven teams of 20 rowers, who will compete for the fastest finish over a distance of 1,200 meters.
