TOKYO, Jan. 1 Kyodo - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.6 rocked a wide area on the Sea of Japan coast Monday, disrupting the festive mood of New Year celebrations, with a large tsunami warning issued for the central prefecture of Ishikawa. The quake, which also shook buildings in central Tokyo, occurred around 4:10 p.m., registering a maximum 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. The Dead Sea depends heavily on inflows from the Jordan River in the north to maintain its water level. In the past decades, farming and mineral extraction in the area are believed to have pulled out more water than can be refilled by natural means, posing ecological threats to the ever-shrinking salt lake. Statistics showed that the dead sea has been shrinking at an alarming pace, dropping by 1.1-1.2 meters each year, and is about half the size it was in 1976.
