Sohgo Security Services unveils security guard robot

TOKYO, Japan - Sohgo Security Services Co. unveils a cutting-edge security guard robot at a shopping mall in Tokyo's Odaiba waterfront district on Nov. 27 ahead of its formal debut there in mid-December. Standing 1.3 meters high and weighing 90 kilograms, the robot -- tentatively named ''Reborg-Q'' -- can go on patrols on behalf of human security guards, detecting fires and issuing alarms, as well as video-taping its surroundings with a camera on top of its head, the company said.

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. said on Jan. 5 it has developed a 103-inch plasma-panel television set (L), the world's largest, with high-definition TV resolution. The prototype TV has a screen 2.3 meters wide and 1.3 meters high. The TV set on the right is a 50-inch television.

Each robot is 1.3 meters tall, weighs 63 kilograms and can move to its destination with the help of eight cameras in its head and a newly developed high-speed three-dimensional image processing system.

Hospital helper robot planned to make debut next spring

OSAKA, Japan - Matsushita Electric Works Ltd. said July 10 it plans to introduce next spring a robot that can work in hospitals delivering small materials such as patient files and X-ray films. With the cooperation of the Shiga University of Medical Science Hospital in Shiga Prefecture, the robot is now being tested for practical use. The 120-kilogram robot is 1.3-meters high, 0.6-meter wide and 0.75-meter in depth.

Japanese probe makes world's 2nd-longest deep-sea cruise

TOKYO, Japan - The Urashima, a Japanese deep-sea probe, is hoisted out of the sea after achieving an unmanned submerged cruise of 220 kilometers, the second longest in the world after the 262 km achieved by a British probe. The photo was released June 22 by the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology. The Urashima, measuring 9.7 meters long, 1.3 meters wide and 1.5 meters high, started the cruise at a depth of 800 meters June 8 and covered the 220 kilometers in 43 hours before suspending the cruise due to an approaching typhoon.
