Canon 1st company to ship 100 mil. compact digital cameras

TOKYO, Japan - Photo shows the PowerShot 600, the first compact digital camera that Canon Inc. released in July 1996. The world's largest digital camera maker said Aug. 19 it has shipped more than 100 million compact digital cameras worldwide, becoming the first company ever to reach the milestone.

Nagatake told Kyodo News she plans to hand out 100 cameras to East Timorese kids in various villages as part of a personal project to foster creativity among the territory's young and capture their perspectives on life. She will then collect the cameras and have the film developed in Japan. Copies of the photos will be sent to the children and the best ones will be given awards.
