ASAHIKAWA, Japan - An Humboldt penguin wears a small camera at Asahiyama Zoo in Asahikawa, Japan's northernmost prefecture Hokkaido, on Nov. 20, 2014, as an IT-related company in Tokyo begins distributing live moving images from the camera to smartphones. The camera, which is 7 centimeters in diameter and about 160 grams in weight, is worn by the penguin on a belt for two or three hours a day.

HAGA, Japan - A handout photo shows a humanoid robot designed to take on work at construction sites and other risky places unveiled by Bridge builder Kawada Industries Inc. and two partners on Sept. 8. The HRP-3P robot demonstrated its functions at Kawada's plant in the town of Haga in Tochigi Prefecture, walking on an icy surface as well as walking under simulated heavy rainfall. The battery-powered robot, which is 160 centimeters tall and weighs 65 kilograms, carries out remote-controlled and preprogrammed work.

Researchers unveil robot capable of jumping into crouch

TOKYO, Japan - A group of researchers, led by Yasuo Kuniyoshi, an assistant professor at the University of Tokyo, on Sept. 12 at the university unveils a human-shaped robot named Daneel that is capable of jumping to a crouching position from its back. The robot, measuring 160 centimeters in height and weighing 70 kilograms, can jump from its back (top photo) to a crouching position (bottom photo) in two to three seconds.
