AWAJISHIMA ISLAND, Japan - About 160 former world leaders and local representatives attended a welcoming reception May 12 on Awajishima Island in Hyogo Prefecture, ahead of a three-day meeting of former leaders starting May 13. Former West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt is serving as honorary chairman, while former Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa (C) and former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser are serving as co-chairmen of the conference, comprised of 35 former prime ministers and presidents from 34 nations.
