The gate to Takanawa Tozenji Temple, the British Legation

Sanmon gate of Tozenji Temple viewed from the temple grounds (opposite from photograph #3420). Since one of the leaning pines has been cut down, this photograph was taken after #3420, probably at the beginning of the Meiji Period. The sea coast came up to the gate at that time. At present, due to landfill, the coast is located at a greater distance. According to Tokyo Annai (Tokyo Information), Tozenji Temple belongs to the Myoshinji School of Rinzai Zen Buddhism and was built in 1610. Built initially built above the reservoir as Reinan-an by the Buddhist priest Reinan, it was moved to Takanawa in 1636 and the name was changed to Tozenji.==Date:Early Meiji, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number71‐2‐0]

The five-story pagoda of Kaneiji Temple

The five-story pagoda of Kaneiji Temple

This five-storied pagoda was built in 1631by Doi Toshikatsu, a minister of the Shogunate, and was donated to Ueno Toshogu Shrine (the shrine dedicated to the first Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu). The original pagoda was destroyed by a fire at Yakushi-do in 1636 and replaced with this pagoda by Doi Toshikatsu the same year. The stone lanterns of Toshogu visible in the foreground are still remain on the north side of the approach to Ueno Zoo. Ownership transferred to Kan'eiji Temple in 1868 and then the Metropolitan Tokyo Government after World War II. Today it is referred to as the former pagoda of Kan'eiji Temple. Only two pagodas from the Edo Period remain in Tokyo at present, this one and another at Honmonji Temple in Ikegami.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number53‐16‐2]

Akasakamon gate

One of the castle gates and approach to Edo Castle. Kuroda built the square shape in 1636, and the gate was restored by Kato and Ogawa in 1639. The description in Edo Meisho says: This gate has a good view of the Big Dipper, so it is an excellent strategic point within Edo Castle. A very similar photo can be seen on page 53 of the Kadokawa Nihon Chimei Daijiten (The Kadokawa Dictionary of Japanese Geographic Names), saying it is a photo taken by the Englishman Black in 1872.==Date:unknown, Place:Tokyo, Photo:unknown, (Credit:Nagasaki University Library/Kyodo News Images) [Cabinet Number22‐11‐0]
