Renovated Kintaikyo Bridge opens to public

YAMAGUCHI, Japan - People stroll across the Kintaikyo Bridge, a popular tourist spot in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on March 20 following a ceremony to mark the completion of renovation work on the bridge, which was originally built in 1673. The work started in November 2001 and cost some 2.6 billion yen.

Pines and firs grow in front of the palace. Oike Garden was built during the Enpo Period (1673-81). This type of garden, called kaiyushiki, had bridges, lanterns, and small pavilions to enhance enjoyment of the beauty of the garden. Otsune Palace is built in the shoin-zukuri style and was rebuilt in 1855. Kintai-kyo Bridge

Kintai Bridge was built in 1673 by Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third lord of Iwakuni Domain. It is said that Kodama Kurohemon designed the bridge. The bridge is a five-arched wooden structure. Shinobasu Pond and Nakanoshima, where Benten-do is located, are viewed from the top of the hill at Ueno. The area between the fences, which stretches right to left, is the racecourse. The overpass, which is the approach to Benten-do, was built between 1661 and 1673. The Sofukuji temple gate is viewed from the precincts of Daikoji Temple. Sofukuji was established by Chinese residents of Nagasaki from the Fujian Province in 1642. It is a temple of the Obaku Zen Sect. The gate, first built in the single-tier Hakkyakumon style in 1673, was re-built in its present style in 1849. Built by Japanese master carpenter Ogushi Gorobei, it featured plastering over piled stones and tiles.
