TOKYO, Japan - The statue of the ''Homba'' mascot, representing the Tokyo district of Nihombashi, is lit up Dec. 14 to kick off an event aimed at revitalizing the commercial district. The statue was created from 18,000 potted flowers and stands 15 meters in height. Its designer, Katsuhiko Hibino, says the structure is in the image of a spirit. The name ''Homba'' is a contracted form of the word Nihombashi and is often used by high school girls as a nickname for the district.

Fujinaka's team left Japan on July 3 to begin the 18,000 kilometer journey through Russia, Europe and the United States. TOKYO, Japan - A four-member group from Tokyo Denki University sets off July 3 on a second attempt to travel around the world in a car converted to run on electric power. Masaharu Fujinaka, professor of electrical engineering at the university, and three of his students left the Kanda campus in Tokyo in the morning for Toyama, central Japan, where they will board a ferry for the Russian Far East city of Vladivostok. The 18,000-kilometer journey, expected to take about 100 days, will take them through Russia, Europe and the United States.
