U.S. team brings back nuclear data documents from N. Korea

WASHINGTON, United States - Sung Kim, director of the U.S. State Department's Office of Korean Affairs, looks May 13 at documents on North Korea's nuclear program that a team of U.S. officials he led received in Pyongyang. North Korea turned the 18,000-page set of documents delineating its plutonium program as far back as 1986 over to the U.S. team last week.

OSAKA, Japan - Shoppers at Mitsukoshi Ltd.'s department store in Osaka look at samples of New Year's dishes for dogs on Oct. 14. The store said it will start accepting reservations on Oct. 21 for 200 assorted dishes which will come in double-tier boxes and cost 18,000 yen.

Tomy to introduce 'conversation robot'

TOKYO, Japan - Toymaker Tomy Co. said March 14 it has developed an artificial intelligence robot (shown in handout photo) capable of recognizing human words for conversation. The robot, called ''memoni,'' will be on sale for 18,000 yen this summer after being displayed at a toy fair to be held in Tokyo later in March.

Illuminated statue unveiled in Tokyo's Nihombashi district

TOKYO, Japan - The statue of the ''Homba'' mascot, representing the Tokyo district of Nihombashi, is lit up Dec. 14 to kick off an event aimed at revitalizing the commercial district. The statue was created from 18,000 potted flowers and stands 15 meters in height. Its designer, Katsuhiko Hibino, says the structure is in the image of a spirit. The name ''Homba'' is a contracted form of the word Nihombashi and is often used by high school girls as a nickname for the district.

Japanese electric car completes round-the-world trip

LOS ANGELES, United States - Masaharu Fujinaka (C), professor of Tokyo Denki University, and his students pose for pictures in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, on Oct. 10 after completing the final leg of their round-the-world journey in an electric car. Fujinaka's team left Japan on July 3 to begin the 18,000 kilometer journey through Russia, Europe and the United States. During the 100-day journey, Masahiro Furukawa, the 22-year-old driver, traveled about 70 kilometers per hour, averaging about 300 km per day.

Japanese attempt 2nd around-the-world electric car trip

TOKYO, Japan - A four-member group from Tokyo Denki University sets off July 3 on a second attempt to travel around the world in a car converted to run on electric power. Masaharu Fujinaka, professor of electrical engineering at the university, and three of his students left the Kanda campus in Tokyo in the morning for Toyama, central Japan, where they will board a ferry for the Russian Far East city of Vladivostok. The 18,000-kilometer journey, expected to take about 100 days, will take them through Russia, Europe and the United States.
